The Top Doorslammers of Matt Abel and Scott MacLean return for the first time in 2012 and bets are on to see who will net the first 5 second pass by a Territorian. Abel is no stranger to records after being the first Territorian to run a 6 second pass at Hidden Valley Drag Strip, and also the first Territorian to run a 5 second pass in Australia. The 5 second zone has so far evaded him at his home track and he is playing coy on the potential for his 3500hp Chevrolet on Saturday night. “We know the track can handle it with John Zappia running a 5.90 in May 2011 and the track is even better this year” Abel said. “The car has the potential but it’s going to come down to the conditions on the night.” MacLean debuted his 1953 Studebaker and shot to Territory fame after being the first rookie in Darwin to run a 6 second pass in his first year of competition. His latest acquisition, a Mustang based Top Alcohol Funny Car also hit the track last month and he is doing double duties on Saturday in preparation for his planned trip to the Winternationals in Queensland. “Driving both the Doorslammer and the Funny Car in the one night is going to be a hard task but we plan to campaign both vehicles in Brisbane next month so I need to get used to the driving style of both cars” explained MacLean. With the Top Alcohol Funny Car having similar power to the Top Doorslammers, but a lighter body, it is the likely favourite to see the first 5 for a Territorian at Hidden Valley. Joining the Top Doorslammers and Top Alcohol Funny Car is a full field of Outlaws, Super Sedans, Modified Bikes and street brackets. This will be the final chance for many of the teams to compete ahead of the 2012 NT Titles from 13-14 July. The Supercharged Shootout gets under way this Saturday at Hidden Valley Drag Strip with gates opening at 1:30pm, qualifying from 2:30-5pm and feature racing underway at 6pm.
