Alice Springs Inland Dragway “ASID” is the newest 1/4 Mile Drag Strip in Australia, built by local volunteers and businesses, and opened in 2008. It is located next to the Stuart Highway, 15 km south of Alice Springs, alongside the Finke Desert Race Start Line. ASID is operated by Central Australian Drag Racing Association, Inc., “CADRA”, and is affiliated with Australian National Drag Racing Association - ANDRA.
Before ASID, CADRA drag raced on a temporary track set up on a runway at the Alice Springs Airport. For 13 years, CADRA Volunteers and the public petitioned the NT Goverment for assistance to build the permanent strip. An $850,000 NT Govt. grant was finally secured, but not enough to build a 1/4 Mile Drag Strip. The strip was made possible by racers, businesses and private donations of cash, materials and labour.
ASID has a standard 1/4 mile long (400 Metre) racing surface, followed by 1 mile of braking area. The barrier walls extend only to the 1/8 mile distance; for safety, the spectator hill and viewing areas stop at the end of the walls. 1/4 mile races are held during daylight hours. Saturday Night races are 1/8 mile under portable lighting donated by Top End Hire.
CADRA is planning improvements for ASID that will attract national rounds of ANDRA racing, such as Top Doorslammers or Supercharged Outlaws. The barrier walls will be raised and extended, and permanent lighting will enable night racing the full length of the 1/4 mile.
CADRA and the Cycling Club are jointly applying for a grant to build a bike race track around the bitumen sealed pit area. This will provide a safe off- road track for cycle racing. We may also host asphalt tyre Kart racing. ASID is evolving into a true, mult-use sporting facility for Alice Springs!
Remember: Street Racing is Not Drag Racing! Come to the Drag Strip, where racing is safe and legal!
